SAM-e stands for S-adenosylmethionine and is pronounced "Sammy". This substance occurs naturally in the body and is required for many biochemical reactions. SAM-e is known as a "methyl donor". It reacts with folic acid and Vitamin B12 to produce methyl groups which are required by various molecules in the body and in the production of dopomine and serotonin which are neurotransmitters and depression fighting brain chemicals.
SAM-e has been studied extensively in Europe as a possible antidepressant and has been tested on patients with arthritis and fibromyalgia. It has also been compared with the more traditional pharmaceutical anti-depressants. SAM-e is a prescription drug in Europe, but in the US it is sold as a dietary supplement and is therefore not regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It has been available in Europe since 1975 and is sometimes used as an alternative to the more traditional anti-depressant drugs. SAM-e was only introduced to the US in 1999.
SAM-e is involved in many liver processes. Supplementation with SAMe can help increase levels of of glutathione in the liver, therby promoting healtrhy liver function.
The response to SAM-e has been huge and it has become one of the most popular supplements on the market.
